Client: Seoul City

Typology: Public / Hospitality

Area: 18 sqm

Location: Seoul, South Korea

Completion: 2025

This project focuses on improving the passenger environment at Seoul Metro’s elevated (above-ground) stations. In 2025, pilot installations were completed at four Line 2 stations—Jamsilnaru, Gangbyeon, Guui, and Ttukseom. We plan to expand these climate-controlled shelters to all elevated platforms across the Seoul subway network.

Unlike underground stations, elevated platforms are exposed to external weather, making it difficult to maintain comfortable temperatures. To address this, we have introduced enclosed shelters equipped with cooling and heating systems. These spaces go beyond simple waiting areas, offering passengers a comfortable place to rest and recharge regardless of the season.

The design is inspired by the Korean term, ‘Dan-a’ (refined grace), representing the calm and refined beauty of traditional Korean architecture. We have modernized elements of the Hanok (traditional Korean house), such as the gentle lines of the eaves and the open, welcoming feel of the ‘Maru’ (porch). The structure is designed to reflect light in a way that improves the overall visibility and atmosphere of the platform. Through this modern interpretation of Korean aesthetics, we aim to provide a space that is both functional and visually serene for every commuter.

To ensure cost-efficiency, some adjustments were made to the initial interior design during the construction phase.
