Environmental Sculpture

This gateway sculpture, created to support PyeongChang’s bid to host the Winter Olympics, serves as a symbolic environmental feature shaping the first impression of the city. It embodies the aspirations of Gangwon-do residents and is designed based on the Olympic symbol of the five rings. Rather than replicating the rings literally, the design boldly abstracts and simplifies their form, using clean white tones to create a minimal yet impactful presence. This simplification enhances the sculpture’s symbolism while allowing it to blend naturally into the urban landscape. At night, the installation incorporates lighting inspired by Obangsaek—the traditional Korean color spectrum of five cardinal colors—adding a distinct atmosphere and meaning after dark. This lighting scheme further emphasizes the sculpture’s presence, reinforcing its role not just as a structure but as a symbolic landmark at the city’s entrance—conveying Gangwon-do’s identity, pride, and collective hopes.
