Wirye Tram Brand Identity (B.I) Winner of the 2024 Red Dot Design Award

The Brand Identity for Wirye Tram, designed by Design Group MECA, was honored with a Red Dot Design Award in 2024. As Korea’s newest tram system under construction in the Wirye New Town, the project carries national significance. Design Group MECA thoroughly analyzed and interpreted the symbolic meaning and future value of the Wirye Tram, embedding these insights into the visual identity. This branding marks the beginning of a new chapter in Korea’s tram history, setting the tone for the country’s next-generation urban mobility.

Wirye Tram Brand Identity – Design Concept

The Wirye Tram is Korea’s first eco-friendly tram system connecting neighborhoods within Seoul’s Wirye New Town. Although trams are a relatively new mode of transport in Korea, this project represents the residents’ long-standing aspirations and opens the door to the tram’s potential as a next-generation mobility solution. The naming of the BI (Brand Identity), “WeTram,” is derived from the first and last letters of Wirye—W and E—while also carrying a deeper meaning through the word “WE”, symbolizing unity, community, and connection. The logo’s design reflects this idea with a modular, infinitely expandable form, allowing W and E to connect in either direction. This symbolizes the tram’s core values of connectivity, scalability, and inclusivity. The identity is flexible and dynamic, adaptable across various applications such as tram stations, signage, and other urban elements—reinforcing a cohesive and recognizable image for Korea’s first tram brand. This concept not only captures the essence of the Wirye community but also positions WeTram as a symbolic beginning for Korea’s tram future.
