The former Dongnae Station, originally constructed during the Japanese colonial period as a transportation hub for resource exploitation, holds deep historical and emotional significance as a space intertwined with the daily lives of Busan citizens. Rather than merely restoring the structure, Dongnae District and Design Group MECCA transformed it into an immersive cultural and historical space that allows visitors to experience and engage with living memory. By preserving the original 1930s wooden railway architecture and incorporating experiential elements such as ticketing simulations and train car recreations, the project offers an accessible and emotionally resonant form of historical education for all generations and backgrounds. This initiative stands as a model of sustainable cultural heritage reuse, reconnecting community memory and setting a new standard for urban regeneration through the integration of public value and creative design.
