On the 6th, Dongnae District in Busan held an opening ceremony for ‘1934 Train Dongnae Station’ at the site of the former Donghae Nambu Line Dongnae Station, and announced that it officially opened to the public on the 7th. ‘1934 Train Dongnae Station’ is an exhibition space restored and renovated from the closed Dongnae Station of the former Donghae Nambu Line. The space was created to revisit and highlight the hardships of local citizens, the historical and cultural significance of the area, and to utilize the site as a new cultural hub for the community.
The space consists of both interior and exterior sections:
- The interior includes a remodeled main station building with a waiting room and an office area.
- The exterior features a train sculpture and various themed installations.
Inside the waiting room, exhibits cover:
- The history of Korea’s railway system
- Forced labor during the Japanese colonial period
- The conscription of student soldiers and patriotic labor corps
- The 1940 anti-Japanese student movement in Busan
- The establishment and role of the Army General School during the Korean War
The office area showcases photos from the 1950s and 60s of Dongnae and its passengers, train tickets, ticket-punching tools, conductor hats, and official railway documents including regulation books called ‘Gyujeong Ryu-chan’. It also includes a photo zone and a space where visitors can try on train conductor uniforms. Children’s programs and activities are scheduled to launch in mid-March after final preparations. The exterior space includes a scaled-down train model, photo zones with railway backdrops, ticket gates, flower beds, informational signage, and rest areas. District Mayor Jang Jun-yong stated, “We hope that the opening of ‘1934 Train Dongnae Station’ will offer visitors the joy of nostalgic travel while also serving as an easily accessible site for historical education and cultural tourism.”
